Los salmónidos tienen un requerimiento de proteína mayor que los mamíferos carnívoros (gato) que a su vez tienen un requerimiento más alto que los mamíferos omnívoros. Usando la misma base de comparación, los requerimientos de aminoácidos en salmónidos son mayores que los de los mamíferos. Este mayor requerimiento de proteína y aminoácidos en peces es debido parcialmente a su bajo requerimiento de energía no proteica; también es parcialmente debido a que las actividades de las enzimas tisulares que desaminan los aminoácidos esenciales no se adaptan a la reducción en el consumo de proteína dietaria.
